As I chose to draw a portrait of this elderly woman, I imagined she had spent her whole life working with vat dyes, turning the skin of her hands leathery and warren over the years. Rendering this texture took the highest priority of my drawing process, as I felt that the wrinkles she acquired told the story of her life and profession.
